Baby Massage Course: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some frequently asked questions that might help before your session.

Q. What age is Baby Massage for?

  • Baby Massage is suitable for babies from birth up until the active crawling stage.  Yet we do recommend that you sign up after the baby's six-week check-up, as it can help identify any developmental issues such as hip dysplasia, their skin is less sensitive and they cope better with stimulating environments.

Q. What should my baby wear in class?

  • Comfortable clothing that is easy to remove. In Baby Massage, it is recommended that your baby's clothing is removed down to their nappy.

Q. What do I need to bring to class?

  • Please bring a towel or blanket for your baby to lie on, a mat for both you and your baby will be provided.

Q. What oil is used in Baby Massage?

  • Cold-pressed organic sunflower oil will be provided and used duration of the baby massage course, extra oil is available to purchase if required. This oil is preferred because it is gentle on the baby's skin, taste-free, and odorless. Additionally, it is natural and free from potentially harmful additives such as SLS, parabens, lanolin, and mineral oil. This type of oil is often chosen for its moisturising and nourishing properties, making it suitable for delicate baby skin. Patch tests can also be conducted upon request to ensure the baby does not have any allergic reactions to the oil.

Q. Do I need to do any preparation before the class?

  • Not at all, just be prepared to immerse yourself in an enriching and rewarding experience.  We recommend that you are dressed comfortably, trim your nails to protect your baby from any scratches, and tie back any long hair.

Q. Can I bring my partner or grandparent to the class?

  • Absolutely! You can bring one extra person with you to class. Please inform us beforehand so we can set up an extra place. However, we recommend only one person conduct the massage or yoga routine with the baby during the session to avoid confusion and disruption to the baby.

Q. What if my baby doesn't want to participate, cries, or naps in class?

  • Our courses are completely baby-led, as we work with the baby by respecting their choice, acknowledging their states, and reading their cues. Our classes are a learning environment where there is no pressure to follow the routine if it's not the right time for you or your baby, instead, you are encouraged to cater to their requirements at any time. We have created a nurturing and informal space, where you should feel relaxed to do as you need to.  We have spare weighted dolls to practice on if your baby decides to nap during the session.

Q. What if my baby does not feel well?

  • If your baby is experiencing any of the following conditions or is unwell, then it is recommended NOT to massage your baby, conduct baby yoga, or attend a class with your baby:

    • High fever or temperature

    • An acute infection

    • Within 48 hrs of immunisation

    • Severe allergies

    • Open wound or skin disorders

    • Vomiting

    • Severe diarrhoea

    • Unhealed umbilical cord

    • Swollen lymph nodes

    • Blood clots or blood condition

    • Recent surgery

Q. How many people are in each class?

  • Maximum 8 participants per class. Our intentionally small class sizes provide a safe, comfortable, and nurturing space.

Q. What happens if I miss a class?

  • Due to small class sizes, missed classes can't be refunded. However, if there's space available on the same course during that term, we'll do our best to move you to a catch-up class. Detailed handouts for each session are provided for reference and practice at home.

Q. My baby was premature, can we come to class?

  • Due to a baby's delicate skin, bones, and immunity, it's essential to attend class as near to their corrected age as possible. If you're unsure, please send us a message for guidance.
