Targeted Ayurvedic Oil Therapies (Basti): Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some frequently asked questions that may help you prepare before your session.

Q. Who can have Targeted Ayurvedic Oil Therapies (Basti)?

Basti therapies are suitable for most adults seeking to relieve tension, restore balance, and support overall wellbeing.

These treatments may be especially supportive for those experiencing joint stiffness, muscular tension, lower back discomfort, neck tightness, digestive imbalance, fatigue, nervous system overload, or areas of chronic weakness or inflammation.

If you have ongoing medical conditions, are pregnant, or have concerns regarding heat-based therapies, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before booking.

Q. What should I wear?

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing.

Only the area being treated will be exposed during the session, with towels and coverings provided throughout to ensure comfort, warmth, and privacy.

As warm oils are used during treatment, you may also wish to wear clothing that you do not mind coming into light contact with oil afterwards. Shower facilities are available should you wish to use them after your treatment.

Q. How do Basti therapies work?

Basti therapies involve retaining warm Ayurvedic oils over a targeted area of the body using a specially prepared therapy ring with a dough outer layer.

The warmth of the oils allows them to deeply penetrate the tissues and joints, helping to:

  • Soothe stiffness and discomfort

  • Nourish and lubricate tissues

  • Calm inflammation and tension

  • Improve circulation and energy flow

  • Support the body’s natural healing processes

Treatments can be focused on areas such as the lower back, neck, knees, abdomen, chest, or joints, depending on your needs and Ayurvedic assessment.

Each session is tailored according to your constitution (dosha), symptoms, and overall wellbeing goals.

Q. Do I need to prepare before my session?

No special preparation is required. We simply recommend:

  • Arriving a few minutes early to settle

  • Staying hydrated

  • Avoiding heavy meals beforehand

  • Avoiding alcohol before your session

Q. Will the treatment be uncomfortable?

Basti therapies are generally experienced as deeply soothing and relaxing.

Most clients enjoy the comforting warmth of the oils and often describe the treatment as calming, grounding, and restorative.

Your therapist will always ensure the oil temperature is comfortable and suitable for you throughout the session.

Q. Are there any conditions where I should avoid treatment?

We recommend postponing treatment if you are experiencing:

  • High fever or acute infection

  • Severe skin conditions, rashes, or open wounds near the treatment area

  • Recent surgery or acute injury

  • Severe inflammation or swelling

  • Pregnancy (unless advised suitable by your practitioner)

  • Severe heat sensitivity or certain circulatory conditions

If you are unsure whether the treatment is suitable for you, please contact us before booking, and we will be happy to guide you.

Q. Can I book regular sessions?

Yes — many clients choose to receive Basti therapies regularly to support long-term healing, mobility, nervous system balance, and overall wellbeing.

For deeper or longer-standing concerns, a course of treatments or follow-up sessions is often recommended to achieve the fullest therapeutic benefits.

Q. What should I do after my treatment?

After your session, we recommend:

  • Resting where possible

  • Staying well hydrated

  • Avoiding strenuous activity for a few hours

  • Keeping the treated area warm

  • Following any personalised aftercare advice from your therapist
